Padma awardee poet Jayanta Mahapatra  passes away

Legendary poet Padma Shri Jayanta Mahapatra passed away today. He breathed his last at the age of 94.

 According to reports, the noted poet passed away while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. He was admitted to the Medical College after suffering from several diseases.

Born on October 22, 1928, Jayanta Mahapatra was the first Indian poet to win a Sahitya Akademi award for English poetry. 

Mahapatra was awarded a Padma Shri in 2009. 

He is the author of poems such as “Indian Summer” and “Hunger”, which are regarded as classics in modern Indian English literature. 

He was also a recipient of several awards. 

His death has created a void that can never be filled.
