Bhubaneswar, Jan. 8: The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) officially commenced on Wednesday at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The event, which honors the contributions of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to India’s development, was inaugurated by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.
In his keynote address, CM Majhi highlighted Odisha’s vast potential as an investment destination, citing its abundant resources, skilled workforce, and modern infrastructure.
“Odisha is a land of immense possibilities. With its natural wealth, vibrant culture, and untapped opportunities, I invite the Indian diaspora to join us in shaping its future,” said Majhi.
Dr. Jaishankar praised the 30-million-strong Indian diaspora for their global achievements and their pivotal role in India’s growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
“Our youth abroad have made India proud. Their energy and innovation are essential to making India a leading global power,” he said.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the contributions of young professionals in science, technology, and healthcare. He encouraged the diaspora’s youth to strengthen collaborations with India.
The three-day event includes key addresses from Prime Minister Modi on Thursday and a valedictory speech by President Droupadi Murmu on Friday. It has attracted policymakers, business leaders, and representatives of the global Indian community.
Launched in 2003 by the Ministry of External Affairs, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India on January 9, 1915—a pivotal moment in the nation’s freedom movement. This year’s event features seminars, cultural performances, and discussions on heritage, innovation, and global partnerships, focusing on topics such as investment opportunities, cultural exchanges, and advancements in digital technology.
The opening session also included remarks from Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for External Affairs; Dr. Dev Pragad, CEO of Newsweek USA; and Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports.
As a platform for strengthening India’s global connections, PBD 2025 reaffirms the critical role of the Indian diaspora in driving socio-economic growth and enhancing the nation’s global influence.
