By Yudhisthira Panigrahi

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about unprecedented challenges worldwide, disrupting lives and prompting individuals to revaluate their priorities. In the midst of these difficulties, the story of Nagaon B village stands out as a testament to the transformative power of community engagement and proactive efforts.

Return to Root

When the first lockdown was imposed due to the pandemic, the author decided to return to their roots in Nagaon B village after a prolonged absence of 15 years. Little did they know that this homecoming would spark a series of initiatives that would significantly impact the community.

High School Transformation

Upon returning, the author observed the state of disrepair of their high school and decided to take action. They initiated a video campaign urging former students to contribute to the “Mo School Abhijan,” a movement aimed at transforming schools in Odisha. Through effective communication and networking, the author secured funding from the local MLA and government bodies, resulting in a complete overhaul of the high school’s infrastructure, including establishing an e-library and science lab.

Community Clean-Up and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

During a community clean-up effort around Nili Bandh (Pond), the author drew inspiration from the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiated by the Indian government. Leveraging their network, they contacted IAS officers working in Odisha, successfully convincing one officer to contribute funds to develop the high school. The village then embraced the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, securing funds and support from local authorities for sanitation and water conservation projects.

Library in a Classroom

Recognizing the impact of the pandemic on children’s education, especially with schools closed, the author took the initiative to provide storybooks to the young minds of Nagaon B. Through the “Donate-a-Book” campaign; funds were raised to establish libraries in classrooms, not only in their village but also in neighbouring areas and feeder schools.

Transformation of Primary School

The author’s commitment to education extended to their primary school, where they successfully mobilized funds to construct a library. Despite challenges from vested interests, the author navigated bureaucratic hurdles, ensuring the allocation of funds for essential facilities like a kitchen, store room, and toilets in the primary school’s development plan.

Community Development Milestones

The positive influence of the author’s initiatives extended beyond education. Notable achievements include the preservation and development of Nili Bandh, mobilizing funds for a Panchayat Park, and fostering a sense of community engagement that resulted in approximately 50 lakhs for the development of the Panchayat Park and Model tank in Nagaon B village.

The story of Nagaon B village is a compelling narrative of how an individual, driven by a sense of responsibility and a deep connection to their roots, can influence positive change even without holding formal power.
